5 Reasons To Live at a Board and Care Home
A board and care home is a place that houses seniors who need long-term care. The facility provides meals, entertainment and cleaning services to senior citizens who are no longer able to live on their own.
1. Fewer Residents
Many of the buildings that house seniors are converted to residential homes. They usually have less than ten residents at a time, allowing the people living there to forge close friendships if they so desire. The low number of residents generally means that there is a favorable ratio of residents to staff members. Staff members and residents are able to form closer relationships and have more flexibility to personalize care based on an individual’s needs.
2. Homey Atmosphere
Because many of the structures are remodeled residential houses and are often in residential neighborhoods, passersby may not even realize that it is a board and care home. The days are less structured, so the people living there are able to move around with more freedom and feel like they are living at a home as opposed to a hospital-like atmosphere.
3. Price
Most board and care homes are more affordable than nursing homes or assisted living communities. One reason for this is that board and care homes do not have medical teams. While some staff members may be trained in administering medication and reminding residents to take their medications on time, that is usually the extent of medical care given. Another reason is the small building size. Because there is not a large building that needs to be maintained and large numbers of staff members to be paid, costs are kept down. Board and care homes can be paid for out of pocket, but insurance policies like Medicaid or VA benefits can help mitigate the costs.
4. Meals
Board and care facilities must follow specific nutritional guidelines when it comes to the diet of their residents. If looking into a facility, ask about the menu to ensure any dietary restrictions can be accommodated. While meals and snacks are provided throughout the day, residents are not required to partake in every meal. However, the outside food will not be reimbursed, so it will be the financial responsibility of the resident if they choose to eat somewhere else or bring in something different. One of the good things about having people eat meals together is that residents can be watched for signs of appetite changes. If there are any changes, the resident can be encouraged to talk to a doctor, or their family can be contacted to make arrangements for the resident to go to an appointment.
5. Entertainment
Staff members are also in charge of planning activities and outings for the residents. Things like crafts, game nights and trips to community centers or the movies will allow residents to stay engaged and entertained. Some facilities make arrangements with nearby senior centers so their residents can join in with larger groups for activities.
Anyone who is no longer comfortable living on their own but does not require medical assistance that is more suitable for a nursing home or assisted living facility should consider a board and care home. They are a great way to get assistance with needed tasks while also retaining the feeling of being in a cozy home.
