4 Ways To Spice Up Your Boring Wedding

Although weddings have strayed far from tradition, there are some recurring themes. If you are planning a wedding, don’t bore guests with another “Instagram-worthy” donut wall. They’ve been there, done that, taken the picture, and eaten the stale maple bacon yeast ring. Rustic signs are all over Pinterest, and they can stay there. Actually, you can do whatever you want. These are just some ideas if you want to have a little fun on the best day of your life.

1. Get All Matchy-Matchy

One of the ways you can sprinkle (donut pun intended) a little fun into your wedding day is by donning some matching ensembles. Yes, this is traditional in the sense that bridesmaids all wear the same hideous dress, and the groom’s tie matches the decor. You can do all of those things, but get a little creative with accessories. DIY some funky pleather jackets with your wedding party roles written on the back. Ditch the flower crowns for some actual crowns for a regal feel.

If you’re less inclined to wear matching outfits outwardly, break out the couples underwear. Matching underwear with your partner-to-be is a sneaky way to match without anyone else knowing it but you. It’s like an inside joke, underneath your tuxedo, ballgown, or androgynous jumpsuit (we aren’t excluding creative garments here). Just make sure there aren’t any funky prints showing through or visible panty lines.

2. Go Green, Humbly

Contrary to popular belief, doing something for the environment doesn’t have to be shouted from the rooftops. There are ways to be eco-friendly with your wedding that don’t feel like you’re rubbing it in the faces of “tradwives” (tradbrides?) everywhere. Go understated with it, but stray away from single-use plastic utensils and overkill with the lighting situation. There are even accessible offerings that make it easy to care about your environmental impact on your big day, like this green wedding package at Chatham University. The options are as open as the clean air you’ll be breathing and contributing positively toward.

3. Give Favors Guests Actually Want

While there are some people out there that like breaking their teeth on Jordan almonds, they are few and far between. Candles are a nice wedding favor, but overdone. If you go the candle route, at least make it a fun scent that you customized with your future spouse. Wedding favors should be useful, or you will see them laying on empty tables at the end of the night clean-up session. Some ideas for unique wedding favors with some flair and practical application include:

  • Confetti
  • Bubbles
  • Gum
  • Shot glasses
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Condoms
  • Deodorant wipes

Likely, your guests will only be looking to the favor bag during the night of the wedding, so make it relevant. Unless it’s something that they would truly display, make it something they could use right then and there.

4. Document Differently

You’ve put all this effort into designing the perfect day. You want to remember it, even as your memory fades with age. It’s important to document moments in a way that preserves the magic of the day (and the chaos of the night, if you so choose). Give everyone their time in the spotlight by having a video confessional. You can put this in a booth or just hand around a camera for guests to record themselves. Have some cards with prompts at the ready for those that just can’t find the words to say how much they love you as a couple and hope you last all eternity.

Whatever you choose to have at your wedding, make it utterly you. Your soon-to-be-spouse won’t cherish the fancy place cards, but they will remember the scent of your favorite perfume as they lean in for that first kiss. Remember that it’s your day, and you should fill it with everything you love to celebrate your love.
