Collective Bias and my New Position

I am going to go way back in December of 2005. Well, back even further. It gets me a bit emotional when I look back. When I first started having my children in the late 80’s we decided I would be a stay at home mom. SAHM and WAHM were not in the vocabulary back then. Dave worked two jobs always and found the time to coach the boys in everything from Kindergarten through junior high sports, letting go at the high school level. By the time my last was in school Dave said, okay time for you to get a job. I was like… A JOB?

I ended up working for US Foodservice in their Customer Service Dept taking orders for restaurants. Fast forward two years I started working from home and fell into the IT Sales Automaton department. I became a mainframe trainer and managing a program for our Customer Service remotely. This was a very awkward system, but best reflected what the reps had on their laptops. Mirroring their data was imperative.

Then in 2005 we all met at the LA  office to be introduced to our boss’s boss. That is where the shit hit the fan. Our Sales Automation department was a bit different. We built the system that are reps used. Big corporations merge and bring in other IT areas that well wanted to make changes. You know the corporate stuff I guess. Well the big boss said there are going to be some big changes. You all think your shit doesn’t stink. This was said.. I looked at my boss who has worked for the company for over 20 years and who’s Sales Automation department was raking in some high numbers. She pointed her finger at us and said do any of you have your Masters?  Basically what good are you.  I thought to myself.  Sheesh I got this far I must be doing something right.  It was a sad day. Our department was broken up. Most of us lost our positions. My boss did first. I was one of them. I Vowed to never return to a traditional position. It was really tough losing that paycheck. Which was much higher than my College Educated girlfriends :-) We had a tough first couple years, moving bills around and putting three kids through college but it all worked out.

I decided when my last was in College to really take my blogging and online presence to another level. I had heard of Collective Bias and the Social Fabric Community but had heard it was really hard to get into. I found an invite in my email and applied right away. Once in the community I jumped in. I was immediately connected to a few of the bloggers. They made me feel welcomed right away. Christy Gossett over at Insanity is Not and Option was very kind and encouraging. I joined the then cbsocially group and enjoyed sharing other bloggers’ posts.  A position became available, I applied but did not get the job.

Fast forward about 6 months later they had another opening and I got the job. Sandy Jenney and Alicia Peiffer have been a great inspiration to me when I was on the cbSocially team. About a month ago our team was asked to get on a Google Hangout with a few more additions not on our team. I thought about California and not trying to think negative thought the team would be broken up. I think positive, so wasn’t really worried just thought it could happen. It is a fast-moving company so anything is possible.

There were some serious faces on the call. Sandy took the reins and for a slight second I was nervous. Then she said we want to hire you all on as Full Time employees. We all broke into laughter. It was  the beginning of the SoFabConnect team. I am overjoyed at the new path I am on and back working for a company as special as Collective Bias. I am so proud to be part of this company! I hope to see a lot of community members at SoFabCon this May!  I am excited to meet the team I have been working with the last few years as well!

Woot woot! Congrats to you :) I really like working with Collective Bias/Social Fabric. My husband thinks I’m nutso every time I have to pitch for a campaign and I run it by him first. Then when I cry when I don’t get chosen, or when I am elated when I do. LOL. But they are my favorite network to partner with. Working for them would be a blast I bet!
