DIY Oil Change
I love my vehicle and try to do most things to keep it humming happily myself.  I take care of the inside and the outside and the motor to have this car for many years.  When we lived in Minnesota taking care of our vehicles was a little bit more tough then they are now living in Florida.  But we still need to check things like wiper blades because we get rain at the drop of a hat.  Here are some tips for taking care of your car.

Changing your oil on a regular basis with  good oil is key.  We now use Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic motor oil  I am going to show you are really great video at the end of this post that is a great tutorial on changing your oil.  Since we moved from Minnesota I am without a lot of my tools for taking care of my car.  Changing the oil without a jack can prove to be a bit uncomfortable but I did it.
3 We take care of our vehicle by doing a few things that are pretty simple.

  • Getting regular car washes and keeping the vehicle detailed helps a lot, down here in Florida we are happy that rust is uncommon down here versus Minnesota.
  • Checking you tires regularly is important, you can either bring them in to your local dealership and they will take care of them plus make sure they have plenty of air.
  • Of course changing the oil. We now are using Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic motor oil. Choose the weight/grade listed in your car’s manual, and buy as many quarts as the manual specifies. I bought 4 quarts for this oil change.DSC_0288Lets talk about what you will need for an oil change.
  • First and foremost a drip pan.  Your going to need to catch the oil when you pull off the drain plug.
  • A socket set to unscrew the plug and you may need a filter wrench as well.
  • A jack or car ramp. (I had neither since I left them in Minnesota when we moved, I have already done this, for me getting under the car on my back is a piece of cake) Also make sure you put something behind the car so it does not roll backwards.

  • Start with a cool car
  • If you have a jack or ramp, use this to lift up the vehicle.
  • Now place the drain pan under the drain plug.  When you use your socket wrench to take off the drain plug, your going to want that pan there, the oil spills out quickly. (Check your cars manual if you have no idea where the plug is.)
  • Let the oil spill out completely, it may take some time.  Once it stops, use a paper towel to tidy up the drain plug area and then screw the plug back on snuggly.
  • Now we will move onto the oil filter.  Locate the filter and place the drain pan below to catch any oil.  Loosen the oil filter, cleaning up the area with a paper towel, now add your new oil filter and tighten snuggly.
  • Now we are going to add in the new Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic motor oil. You will want to use a funnel, which I did not have but have been changing my own oil for years so I am pretty comfortable using the smaller oil cans.  Look at your cars manual to determine how much oil you will need.

Once you have added the oil your going to want to check to see you have added enough. open up the oil cap and remove the oil stick.  The replace when finished.  Clean up any oil leaks, then turn on the car and let it run a bit, turn off and you are good to go!  Watch this video for a really detailed tutorial.
