In the wake of America’s opioid crisis and changing attitudes towards the medical and recreational use of cannabis, you may be hearing about CBD oil. Many sing its praises as a natural alternative to addictive painkillers. Others espouse its practical applications to ease anxiety and stress. Still, there’s quite a bit of confusion among the general public about what it actually is, and perhaps more importantly, what it isn’t. Here is an overview that should be helpful if you’re interested to learn more.

What is It?

CBD oil is shorthand for Cannabidiol, which is an active ingredient drawn from the cannabis plant. It is legal to get my supply in most states because it is not psychoactive. The common misconception is that it is simply a different form of recreational marijuana. While the cannabis plant contains THC, the psychoactive ingredient in hallucinogenic marijuana, CBD is the active ingredient of CBD oil, and it does not contain THC.

What Can it Do?

Proponents of CBD oil point to many scientifically-backed health benefits. The major one is its ability to act as an effective painkiller, making it an attractive alternative to opioids. When taken orally, CBD oil has been shown to reduce inflammation and dull chronic joint, muscle, and bone pain.

CBD oil has also shown less obvious benefits. In some people, it can fight acne and promote healthy skin. It also has properties that help promote a healthier heart, fighting some circulatory issues like high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. It also has been shown to help fight off some neurodegenerative conditions and boost the body’s immunity to certain cancer-spreading risks.

Perhaps its most popular attribute is its ability to help reduce stress and anxiety for many users. Most data shows that CBD oil is far more effective in this area and far less harmful than alcohol or other drugs like sleeping pills.

Are There Long-Term Downsides to Use?

Most side effects of CBD oil are short-term and mild, especially when compared to the addictive nature of opioids and alcohol. Still, it does not mix well with certain medications, so one should always consult their physician before beginning use. Beyond that, common side effects are diarrhea, fatigue, and increased or decreased appetite, which can lead to weight gain or loss.

As CBD oil gains mainstream acceptance and use, we will continue to see how this data evolves. But for many, it is nothing short of a miracle drug, giving positive results for a wide swath of issues.
